You half-know the answer already or you would not be here. The short version: "giving head" is slang for oral sex. The longer version is more useful than the dictionary, so keep scrolling.

The Quick Definition

Giving head = using your mouth to stimulate a partner's genitals.

The "head" in the phrase originally referred to the head of the penis, since the tip is the most sensitive part and the etymology of the slang. Today it is used more loosely. "Going down on someone" is essentially the same phrase. So is "blow job" (which despite the name does not involve any actual blowing).

In current usage, the phrase is gender-neutral. People say it about oral sex on women, on men, on anyone. Some prefer specific terms (cunnilingus, fellatio) but in casual speech "head" covers all of it.

Four Real Moves

The technique behind the slang. These work the first time, no special skills required.

The hand-plus-mouth combo

Wrap one hand around the base of your partner. Use your mouth on the upper third, the head specifically. Hand and mouth move together as one unit. Full coverage without gagging. Use lube on the hand, keep it twisting slightly as it moves.

The tongue swirl around the head

When your mouth is on just the head, use your tongue to circle the rim where head meets shaft (the coronal ridge). Light pressure. The most nerve-dense spot. Many partners can finish from this alone if you stay consistent.

The suction without depth

Seal your lips around the head only. Apply gentle, sustained suction. Tongue flickers softly against the underside. Targets the most sensitive part with no need to go deep. No throat-control skill required.

The eye contact beat

At a few moments during the act, look up. Make eye contact. Not constant. Once or twice intentionally, at moments that matter. The psychological component of oral is huge.

Once they are responding (breathing change, sounds, hips lifting), DO NOT CHANGE WHAT YOU ARE DOING. Same speed, same pressure, same circle. Most beginners pivot right when something starts working. Do not.

If you are the one receiving, these things make it easier on the giver.

Make sounds and movements

Silent receivers are hard to read. Even small responses (a sigh, a hip shift) tell the giver what is working.

"That is good." "A little softer." "Right there." Brief, clear, encouraging. The giver is not psychic.

Do not push their head

Setting hands on their hair is fine. Pushing down is not. Take the cue from how they are moving themselves.
