What Kama Sutra Actually Is

A philosophical text covering desire, pleasure, courtship, marriage, and a small section on sexual positions.

The Kama Sutra was written by Vatsyayana around the 2nd to 3rd century CE. It covers life, relationships, pleasure as one of the four aims of life. The sex positions section is a small fraction of the text. The original work has roughly 64 positions in its sex section, with stylized descriptions and Sanskrit names.

Modern kama sutra position guides typically pick a few of the historical positions, rename them creatively, and pad with random other positions for the listicle. The actual text is more philosophical and culturally specific than the marketing suggests.
